SHILLONG: Taking strong note of the recent rape case in East Garo Hills District of the State, the Meghalaya Mahila Congress has demanded strong action against the culprits who indulged in the heinous crime.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, the All Meghalaya Mahila Congress vice president Abigail H Bareh said, “There should be either life-term or death sentence for such culprits depending on the case.”

While alleging that the State Government was slow in tackling the menace, the women’s group also said that it will submit a representation to the government to constitute the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights.

According to Bareh, the rising number of rape cases in the State is alarming.

The Mahila Congress also rued the fact that the State has only few counseling centres. “We need a lot of counseling centres for affected families who often compromise the case after being threatened by the culprits,” she said.

It may be noted that an 18-year-old girl was raped by around 16 miscreants near Sacred Heart School in Williamnagar while she was returning from the Simsang Festival venue along with two of her friends at around 11 pm on Thursday last.

The Mahila Congress also condemned the recent case where a 23-year-old medical student was gang raped and brutally assaulted inside a moving bus in New Delhi.
