SHILLONG: East Khasi Hills District Selection Committee chairman Sanjay Goyal informed that he has recommended the Government for an extension of the merit list of the qualified candidates who are eligible for appointment to the various posts under Grade IV, by another six months.

“But it seems that the Personnel department was not very keen to give the extension,” Goyal who is also the Deputy Commissioner told reporters here on Thursday.

According to Goyal, the main reason which has led to his disapproval on the part of the Government for giving an extension is because there are court cases filed by people who are against such extension.

The DSC chairman did not divulge any details about the court cases which are against the extension of the merit list.

Goyal however admitted that they had not mentioned the number of vacancies in the advertisement for filling up of the various posts under Grade IV.

“We purposely did not mention the number of vacancies in the advertisement since by the time we conduct the interview, the number of vacancies would increase,” he said while adding that Grade IV is such a category that they always found that the numbers of vacancies would always increases in a span of few months.

The DSC chairman said that they would always mention the number vacancies in the advertisement if it is recruitment for other categories of Government servant.

When asked about the Supreme Court ruling of January 27, he also agreed that the apex court ruling mentioned that the Government cannot recommend for appointments beyond the number of posts which have been advertised.

Goyal however asserted that the apex court ruling is also applicable to the Grade IV qualified candidate.

Replying to another query, Goyal said that it is true that the convention which is being followed in the past is that the DSC would call for a fresh interview only after all the candidates in the merit list get the appointment.

Meanwhile, East Khasi Hills Qualified and Unemployed Grade IV Association 2011 held a sit-in protest at the parking lot near Additional Secretariat on Thursday.

Interestingly, despite the sit-in protest, there was no response from the Government side to call the agitated qualified candidates for a dialogue.

Following this adamant attitude of the Government, the qualified candidate have decided to hold the sit-in protest for the second consecutive day on Friday to pressurize the State Government to extend the period of the merit list of the qualified candidates who are eligible for appointment to the various posts under Grade IV.

It may be mentioned that out of the 331 qualified candidates in the merit list, so far only 122 candidates have got the appointment while there are another 209 candidates who are yet to get an appointment.
