SHILLONG: The Garo Hills based NGOs will hold a rally on Friday in protest against the gang-rape of an 18-year-old girl near Sacred Heart School in Williamnagar while demanding justice for the victim. Six NGOs — GSU, Achik Youth Welfare Organisation (AYWO), FKJGP, the Garo Hills Sentinel for Human Rights, People’s Movement for Democratic Rights and the Movement for Peace and Harmony — will take out the rally from Rongrenggre school playground at Williamnagar at 11am.
Meanwhile, in a delayed reaction, the Meghalaya State Commission for Women on Thursday condemned the dastardly acts of crime and violence against women (read rape cases), which were reported in the State and the National Capital recently. While demanding that all rape cases should be tried in fast track courts, the Commission stated that no bail should be granted to the accused until the investigation is completed.
The women’s body also recommended strong punishment for the perpetrators of such heinous crimes and a resolution was also taken up in respect to the rape cases in Ri Bhoi, Williamnagar and all other pending cases.
It may be mentioned that in March 2012, the commission had written to the State Director of Health Services, DIGP and Law Commission that cases relating to rape should be taken up as topmost priority to ensure that necessary action can be taken at the earliest.
