Rebellion may hurt Cong prospects

SHILLONG: Congress is facing rebellion over selection of candidates in Jaintia Hills with as many as six sitting party MDCs have decided to contest against the party’s official nominees in the upcoming Assembly elections.

Though the party is yet to announce the list of candidates, the resentment within the state unit over candidate selection is playing out in the open.

The six MDCs, who have decided to defy the directive from the Jaintia Hills District Congress Committee (JHDCC) to support the party’s official nominees, will join the fray either as Independent or representing other political parties.

With this latest development, Congress faces a challenge within. This may hurt the prospects of the Congress candidates.

According reliable sources, the sitting Congress MDCs who have made their intentions clear includes the JHADC chairman Obil Kyndait.

According to party sources, the sitting Congress MDC from Narpuh Mongolsing Tyngkra will contest against Congress legislator Comingone Ymbon (Raliang) from Sutnga Saipung.

Two other MDCs Obil Kyndiat (Tuber) and Amos Dkhar (Musniang Rngad) are planning to take on Congress legislator Nehlang Lyngdoh (Rymbai) at Khliehriat.

Another sitting Congress MLA from War-Jaintia would have to take on two Congress MDCs Stephanson Mukhim (War West) and Dunno Nongpluh (Jowai South) at Amlarem.

Meanwhile, another Congress MDC (Moobakhon Khandul) Hilarius Dkhar would be contesting against Nongbah-Wahiajer Congress legislator Sniawbhalang Dhar from Nartiang constituency.

The Independent MDC from Jowai Moonlight Pariat, who is also a former JHADC CEM, will make things tough for Education Minister and sitting Congress legislator from Jowai Prof RC Laloo.
