Ex-minister Maysalin War dead

SHILLONG: Former Minister and Mawthengkut legislator Maysalin War passed away at Gordon Robert Hospital, Jaiaw on Thursday evening. She was 88 years.

Family sources informed that War was rushed to the hospital on Thursday morning after she suffered a stroke. She, however, breathed her last at around 4.30 pm, family sources said.

The funeral will take place on Saturday.

War, a former sergeant in the Women Army Corps, Calcutta, was born on January 15, 1924. War was first nominated as the member to the Provisional Meghalaya Legislative Assembly in 1970.

She was first elected to the State Assembly from Mawthengkut constituency in 1988 on a Congress ticket. War retained the seat in 1993 election.

In 1998, she was again elected to the Assembly but this time on a HSPDP ticket. It may be mentioned that War unsuccessfully contested the 2008 Assembly election as an Independent candidate.

The former Mawthengkut legislator served as a Minister in the departments of health & family welfare, community & rural development and social welfare.

War also held various other important positions including Honorary Secretary of Indian Red Cross Society Nongstoin and member of the Meghalaya State Social Welfare Board,

On January 21, 2010, during the 38th Meghalaya Day, War was facilitated for her contribution in the Hill state movement.
