CM avoids chopper

Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma, who was scheduled to go to Tura in a chopper, on Saturday avoided it and instead went to West Garo Hills by road, fearing implications of poll code of conduct.

After the model code of conduct came into effect on January 11, the political parties should bear the expenditure of the chopper trips. Moreover, any official or personnel visit cannot be clubbed with electioneering.

Silent campaign

Despite the announcement of election date, candidates have restricted themselves to door-to-door campaigning.

This door-to-door canvassing started much before the announcement of the election date.

However, the imposition of model code has made the campaign all the more a low-key affair. The candidates continue to visit houses to meet voters, but not in large groups. Holding public meetings is yet to take place.
