SHILLONG: Along with the rest of the country, the Oil Industry in association with the Ministry of Petroleum and other stakeholders on Wednesday observed the Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight starting from January 16 till January 31. A function was held to mark the occasion
The idea behind the observation is to create an awareness about the conservation and the efficient utilisation of petroleum products among the people.
The function deliberated on the different ways and means to sustain petroleum products for the future generation.
Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Commissioner of Food and Civil Supply Commissioner, MHK Marak, asserted that petroleum products are vital inputs for socio-economic development of any country.
“As indigenous crude production is unable to keep pace with the growing demands, the county is heavily dependent on the imports resulting into huge foreign exchange outgo,” she said,
She stressed on the need of protecting the environment by means of judicious use of oil and gas which is the wealth of the country
Almost about eighty precent of the total requirement of the country is depended on imports, stated Ajay Kumar, the state level coordinator for Meghalaya and Senior Divisional Retail Manager, IOC Ltd.
Experts from the oil and petroleum sectors who participated in the meeting also dwelt on the need to organise the various awareness activities and programmes to help conserve the valuable natural resources.
Later they pledged to conserve the resources and create awareness in various sectors of the economy like transport, industry, agriculture and the household. A quiz competition was also organised on the occasion.
