Agartala: Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) held a meeting today to cease the tension among the supporters following announcement of the party candidates for the state assembly polling early this month.

However, tension continued in Khayerpur area of eastern Agartala with the replacement of veteran congress leader and party spokesperson Ratan Chakraborty with Youth congress leader Baptu Chakraborty on Friday night.

The party is yet to decide the candidate of prestigious Matabari constituency of Udaipur of South Tripura while royal family member Maharaj Pradyut Kishore Debbarman has still been fighting for Matabari but TPCC reportedly disagreed with his entry.

“Pradyut was requested several times byseveral leaders including top bosses of AICC to contest in tribal reserved Charilam constituency before finalisation of the candidates but he refused to come in the fray; now with his indulgence, a group of his followers demonstrating for his nomination at Matabari, which is not only unnecessary creation of chaos also extend support to the left front,” said TPCC President Sudip Roy Barman.

Regarding replacement of Baptu with Ratan Chakraborty in Khayerpur, Mr Roy Barman made a reserved comment: ‘Ratan Chakraborty was our choice considering poll prospect but Baptu’s entry is known to us at the final stage and though it is embarrassing for Ratan Chakraborty, yet our sincere appeal to him to be work unitedly to oust left front.’

According to party insiders, nomination of Baptu Chakraborty has triggered resentment among TPCC leaders because Ratan Chakraborty was the best candidate for Khayerpur to fight against heavy weight CPI-M nominee Pabitra Kar. They blamed Rahul Gandhi for the situation who pressed AICC for the nomination of Baptu Chakraborty avoiding the recommendation of TPCC as well as denying the ground reality of poll prospect.

Similarly, the party is facing trouble in nomination for Matabari constituency and fresh negotiation of Maharaj Pradyut Kishore for the seat. After detail exercise the party had listed out two names for the seat where prospect of youth congress president Susanta Choudhury was appeared to be brighter. (UNI)
