SHILLONG: East Khasi Hills Police on Saturday evening arrested four overground workers of the GNLA from Sweety Bar at Polo, a report on Sunday said.
The apprehended persons have been identified as Vincent T Sangma (20) of Weikut (South West Khasi Hills), Viraj Chungkan R Sangma (21) and Najim R Sangma (22) of Chima Apal Dainadubhi (North Garo Hills) and London A Sangma (25) of Bagli village (South West Khasi Hills).
According to the police, the arrested persons were working under GNLA Area Commander, West Khasi Hills, Jack Marak.
The police also seized 24 SIM cards, six cell phones, two ATM cards, a laptop, an Alto (ML 05 5997), one Bike (ML05 J 7049), one GNLA demand note, two rubber seals of the headman of Weikut and Rajai and one Dongle with SIM from the arrested cadres.
When contacted, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M Kharkrang said that the four persons have been in Shillong for some time.
Kharkrang also said these overground workers were educated youths since they were operating high-tech equipments including laptops.
The arrested persons have been remanded in 10-day police custody by the court on Sunday.
The SP however brushed aside speculations on possibility that the GNLA might have extended its activities to Khasi Hills following reports that the arrested persons were working for the GNLA under the West Khasi Hills Area Commander.
“They are not actually in operation here but they have been involved in extorting money from various districts of the state and brought the same here,” Kharkrang said.
