SHILLONG: Community and Rural Development Minister Saleng M Sangma, who was denied ticket by Congress, is all set to contest the upcoming Assembly election from UDP.
Confirming this here on Monday, a source from the party said Sangma sought ticket to contest from Gambegre constituency.
The Congress has fielded Besterfield N Sangma instead of Saleng from Gambregre.
“Though the party State Election Committee (SEC) is yet to take the final call on the matter, but it is more or less confirmed that the ticket would go to Saleng. It is only a matter of formality now,” the source said.
Meanwhile, the UDP has announced candidates for Mawryngkneng and Khliehriat.
Informing this after the SEC meeting on Monday, UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh said Hailander Kharmalki and Obil Kyndait would contest from Mawryngkneng and Khliehriat respectively.
The UDP working president said that the party would declare the final list of candidates on February 8.
When asked about the party’s election manifestoes, he said the party manifesto was expected to be finalised on the same day when the final list of candidates would be released.
“The draft manifesto has been circulated to all the district units for their views,” UDP working president said.
The party has so far declared 46 candidates.
The UDP would contest in 35 out 36 seats in Khasi Jaintia Hills (except Nartiang) while out of the 24 Assembly constituencies in Garo Hills, the party will put up candidates from all the constituencies.
