SHILLONG: The KHNAM on Wednesday formed its first full-fledged women’s wing for Shillong North Constituency at a gathering held at the Khasi National Dorbar Hall, Mawkhar.

KHNAM also elected new office bearers for Shillong North Constituency.

KHNAM president Pyndap Saiborne, who is also the party candidate from Mawlai constituency, informed that the party will announce the second list of candidates and its manifesto within next week.

Saiborne also made use of the opportunity to slam the MUA government saying that the Congress has done nothing for the State except bringing about mis-governance and corruption. He also came down hard on the Congress’ coalition partner, the UDP, saying that despite being a part and parcel of the MUA, the UDP did nothing except for mere talks and allegations.”

Reiterating that their efforts would be focused on strengthening their mission, the KHNAM president said, “We will play a constructive role in bringing about change in this State if we are voted to power because what the State needs at present is change.”

Maintaining that only a regional party will understand the problems of the people of the State, Saiborne said, “KHNAM will not have to depend on any high command from Delhi to bring about changes in the State.”

KHNAM general secretary and candidate from Shillong North constituency, Adelbert Nongrum, said that his decision to contest the election was aimed at fighting suppression of the people’s rights.

Nongrum, who is also the Jaiaw MDC, said, “I have argued on many important issues in the District Council but they were being pushed to the State Government, which is why I have decided to step in and fight in the race so to be able to argue the same in the government as an MLA to ensure that our people’s rights are protected.”

“The main issue the party is concerned with is influx. The party is not against any other community in the State,” Nongrum added.
