SHILLONG: In a poll related incident, unknown miscreants tried to abduct the driver of an Independent candidate contesting from Mawkynrew constituency in East Khasi Hills.

The driver, identified as Morningstar Nongrum, working for Independent candidate Bantei Lyngdoh, however, escaped from the clutches of his abductors on Thursday.

According to police, it was at around 10.30 pm on Thursday that the goons, who came in a Maruti Gypsy, abducted Nongrum from Jongksha. The vehicle did not have any registration number plate. However, on approaching Thangsning, the driver managed to escape, police added.

Police are investigating whether the abduction bid has anything to do with the February 23 polls or it was due to some other fall out.
