SHILLONG: BJP leader Kiren Rijiju has ridiculed the election promise of Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma that the Congress would eliminate the scourge of militancy once elected to power by saying that the Congress party under the leadership of Dr Sangma is using the underground elements in Garo Hills to win the upcoming elections.

Speaking to The Shillong Times over phone on Tuesday, Rijjiju, who is campaigning in Garo Hills, said, “It is an irony that on one hand Congress was using militants to win the elections in Garo Hills, on the other the Chief Minister is claiming in the manifesto that the Congress Government will eliminate militancy.”

“I have been campaigning in Garo Hills and I have received inputs from people that the militants are resorting to unfair means in support of Congress candidates”, he added

However, the BJP leader asserted that his party would do better in this election especially in Garo Hills.

The BJP has fielded 13 candidates for the February 23 Assembly polls.

“The Congress-led Government led by Dr Sangma was a complete failure and people have realized this,” he said adding that the people in Garo Hills do not have any good opinion about the performance of the Chief Minister

He also said the party had overcome the misinformation campaign that it is anti- Christian as BJP has fielded many Christian candidates in Meghalaya.

The BJP leader also deplored that even after winning for three consecutive terms, the act of former BJP legislator AL Hek, who is now contesting from Pynthorumkhah on a Congress ticket, has saddened the party.
