SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Secretary WMS Pariat has gone on leave since his brother-in-law is contesting the Assembly elections.

The brother-in law of Pariat Lamboklang Mylliem is contesting from Jirang in Ri Bhoi on a newly-formed North East Social Democratic Party ticket.

The additional chief secretary Barkos Warjri will function as the officiating chief secretary till the elections are over.

The Nagaland Chief Secretary and his wife, who is an additional chief secretary, went on leave from February 9 as per the direction of the Election Commission since their son is contesting the Assembly polls there.

The Chief Electoral Officer P Naik told reporters on Wednesday that Pariat conveyed to him that he would on leave till the completion of elections .

“It was his personal decision and the Election Commission did not give any directive in this regard,” Naik said adding that taking leave had nothing to do with the violation of poll code and it was only a propriety.
