SHILLONG: There is no wonder to those who are familiar with the peculiar names of persons in Meghalaya. However, Wonderlyne Lapang ( UDP- Jirang) and similar new entrants contesting the February 23 Assembly elections still make a difference in the monotonous campaigns.
Among the 345 candidates, besides Adolf Hitler, and Frankenstein Momin, there are the newcomers like Independent candidate Adamkid Sangma who is contesting from North Tura close to South Tura where Billikid Sangma is the Congress candidate. However, Kismet Sangma, an independent candidate from North Tura feels that luck (kismat) will favour him.
In the constituency of Pynthorumkhrah, the new entrant, Predecessor Rumnong (UDP) will take on Process Sawkmie, who is contesting as Independent.
Bombersingh Hynniewta (HSPDP) contesting from Mylliem does not have any fear as he has been contesting the seat for long from the same party.
Independent candidate Hilarious Dkhar from Nartiang and Hilarious Pohchen (Nongkrem) also an independent, are not related unlike the brothers Founder Cajee ( Ind) and Sounder Cajee (Congress), contesting from Mawlai and Shillong South constituencies respectively.
Amidst the fight between the heavyweights, an element of romance will be added due to the entry of Romeo Phira Rani, who is contesting from East Shillong on a BJP ticket.
Congress candidate, Adolf Lu Hitler R Marak, now contesting from Bajgengdoba gave way to Zenith Sangma (Congress) to contest from the former’s Ragsakona constituency to reach the zenith of victory.
The past history of elections showed that Hitler, a former minister from NCP , had lost to Zenith (Congress) in 2003 Assembly elections, but Hitler defeated Zenith in 2008.
Finally, Hitler decided to forget and forgive and in return, he got the Congress seat this time.
Besides Hitler, another Congress candidate from Garo Hills, Frankenstein Momin (Mendipathar) is a strong contender.
While UDP has fielded Field Marshal Mawphniang to contest Umsning where there are many heavy weights, Highlander Kharmalki also from UDP chose to contest from Mawryngkneng. Friday Lyngdoh, former MPCC from the Congress has decided not to be in the fray for the February 23 polls which falls on a Saturday.
Moonlight Pariat from Jowai and Finelynes Bareh from Khliehriat are independent candidates.
While Hoping stone Lyngdoh (HSPDP) takes on Adviser Pariong (Congress) at Nongstoin, the former fielded his party man Hopingstone Masharing to contest from Mawhati in Ri Bhoi.
However, with a hope of victory, Hopeful Bamon, an Independent candidate is campaigning aggressively in Sutnga-Saipung in East Jaintia Hills.
While HSPDP candidate Ardent Basawimoit (Nongkrem) has an ardent desire to defeat his opponents, Fairly Bert Kharrngi (BJP) also from Nongkrem wanted the political battle to be fair.
Mawshynrut constituency which has the maximum number of candidates has candidates like Methodius Dkhar (Congress), Witting Mawsor (HSPDP) and independents , Anvil Lyngdoh and Livingstone Marak.
Congress has no dearth of bold and special names as they have also fielded candidates like Boldness Nongum to contest the delimited Mawthadraishan seat of West Khasi Hills. In Garo Hills, while Pillarson G Momin (BJP) is contesting from Raksamgre, Secondson Sangma is an Independent candidate from Baghmara.
In Salmanpara constituency of South West Garo Hills, Winnerson D Sangma (Congress) are fighting against Independent Rightious Sangma and NPP’s Boston Marak (NPP)
Come February 23, the desire of Coming one Ymbon, from Raliang constituency, West Jaintia Hills contesting from the Congress is to come back to the Assembly, but it all depends on how he manages to overcome the onslaught of his opponents.
