New Delhi: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)on Saturday issued notices to the Union Home Secratary and Assam DGP asking them to submit a report with regard to deaths due to violent clashes during panchayat polls in the state.

Taking suo motu cognisance of a media report, NHRC asked the authorities to submit reports in the matter within four weeks, an NHRC press release said.

According to the media report, several persons died in violent clashes over panchayat polls in Assam, and many out of them had reportedly died in police firing and the rest in clashes between people who were opposed to the elections and those who supported it at different places, the release said.

Reportedly, the mob armed with lathis and iron rods blocked roads and attacked polling parties.

The mob targeted the police and other paramilitary forces when they went to stop the violence, it said.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raised a serious issue of violation of human rights. (PTI)
