Gogoi urges NRHM to expedite enrolment of BPL families

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday directed the state unit of NRHM, the nodal agency for implementing Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY), to expedite the process for enrolment of BPL families in the districts.

The Chief Minister during a review meeting directed the updating of figures of BPL families on an annual basis to make the process of selecting beneficiaries hassle-free and less time consuming.

Gogoi also agreed in principle for recruiting a responsible officer and a professional team for smooth execution of the scheme, official sources said.

Assam Minister for Health and Family Welfare Himanta Biswa Sarma apprised the Chief Minister that the process for fresh enrolment of BPL families in Jorhat, Kamrup, Lakhimpur districts have been going on while it has been completed in Dibrugarh district.

Fresh enrolment of BPL families will commence in Kokrajhar district from March one this year and the enrolment of beneficiaries for the remaining 18 districts would be covered by May this year, Sarma added.

Gogoi stressed on the need for strengthening the grievance redressal mechanism for effective implementation of the scheme.

He also directed the Labour and Employment Department to prepare the list of beneficiaries of non BPL unorganised workers under the scheme and submit the same to the NRHM, Assam soon.

The RSBY has been extended to cover certain segments of non BPL unorganised sector workers such as construction workers, street vendors, licensed railway porters, vendors, bidi workers, rickshaw pullers, rag pickers, mine workers, sanitation workers, auto rickshaw and taxi drivers. (PTI)
