SHILLONG: Following the peaceful conduct of election in the State on February 23, Chief Electoral Officer P Naik on Wednesday urged the people to remain calm during the counting of votes on Thursday.

“I appeal to the people of the State to maintain law and order during and after the counting of polls,” Naik said.

He also thanked the voters, candidates, political parties and the media for making the February 23 poll a success.

According to Naik, there was adherence to the model code of conduct during the election process and due to the strict vigil of the police, central paramilitary forces and electoral officers of all the districts, a peaceful poll was ensured.

Naik also added that there was no room for any re-poll anywhere in the State.

He, however, admitted that malfunctioning of EVMs was a cause of concern.

“This time as many as 25 EVMs malfunctioned compared to 3 or 4 in the 2008 Assembly election,” Naik said.

The CEO assured that several steps are being taken to ensure that technical problems related to EVMs do not recur in future elections.
