Agartala: Chief Minister Manik Sarkar on Friday assured the assembly that the government would provide adequate compensation to the victims who suffered from post poll violence in Tripura during the past fortnight.
On the first day of maiden session of the 11th state assembly, opposition Congress raised the issue of post poll violence allegedly perpetrated by the ruling Left Front across Tripura.
Sarkar informed that all eight district magistrates were asked to submit detailed report on the violence within a week.
“As soon as we get the report of damage caused by post poll violence, the state government would announce adequate compensation to the victims considering the gravity of loss. But I am urging all the people and party leaders to stop violence and help the government deliver the best,” Sarkar said.
He, however, made it clear that the government would not spare any illegal act of any party or individual taking advantage of return of new Left Front government.
He added that the government sought support of all political parties and citizens to ensure good governance.
Raising the issue of post poll violence Congress president Sudip Roy Barman alleged that thousands of innocent opposition supporters had been targeted by unruly CPI-M cadres.
They were beaten up, their houses burnt down, Congress party offices destroyed and women raped.
Now the ruling party supporters were asking for subscription in the name of victory celebration.
“Even after 15 days of announcement of the poll result, the state government failed to restore peace and we shall boycott the entire ongoing session in protest against the violence,” Roy Barman said.
The first session of the assembly had begun with the election of Speaker and Ramendra Ch Debnath was re-elected unanimously.
Later the governor addressed the members where he highlighted the success of the 6th Left Front government and the highest women turn out in the assembly poll.
Earlier, Congress leaders Sudip Roy Barman, Ratan Lal Nath and Gopal Roy alleged in the house that after last month’s assembly polls, violence against the opposition party members has been unleashed by the ruling CPI-M (Communist Party of India-Marxist) cadres.
“The violence intensified after the declaration of the election result Feb 28. Houses, shops and rubber gardens belonging to Congressmen were either burnt down or damaged in the series of attacks across the state,” Barman said.
He said that many women were raped and people left Tripura for neighbouring Assam and Mizoram, and even Bangladesh, to evade attacks.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, accompanied by Congress general secretary in-charge of the northeastern states Luizinho Faleiro and Congress general secretary Shakeel Ahmed, earlier this month visited Tripura to take stock of the violence.
Gogoi and other Congress leaders also met Tripura Governor D.Y. Patil and requested him to ask the state government to stop the political hostilities and attacks. (Agencies)
