SHILLONG: There seems to be no end to mining tragedies in the State as two more coal labourers have lost their lives inside coal mines in the last two days.

On March 17, a boulder fell on Biliteng Basumatary, while he was working inside a coal mine at Lamyrsiang in East Jaintia Hills. He died on the spot.

A similar incident took place on March 16, when a boulder fell on Md. Faizur Rahman Mazumdar (32), while he was working inside a coal mine at Rymbai village, East Jaintia Hills. He, too, died on the spot.

The State Labour department has taken strong note of the recent incidents and now the department is planning to implement all the recommendations of the State Mining policy with regards to the safety of labourers.

It may be mentioned that on March 10 at about 12 noon, while six coal labourers were getting into a coal pit in a make-shift lift at Era Aning, South Garo Hills, the wire snapped resulting in the death of three labourers identified as Nur Muhammed, Mominul Islam and Mukul Hussain. Police said that they fell into the coal pit and died on the spot, while the three others sustained injuries.

Yet again on March 14, one coal labourer identified as Tapjeng Marak died on the spot while another worker Dilsang D Sangma was injured when a coal mine caved in at Nangalbibra in South Garo Hills.
