SHILLONG: The State Labour Department has notified the formation of the State Social Security Board for unorganized workers under the unorganized workers Social Security Act 2008.

As per the documents available with The Shillong Times, each State has to set up the State Social Security Board under the purview of the unorganized workers Social Security Act 2008.

The Minister of Labour and Employment will be the chairman while the principal secretary or secretary will be the member secretary of the board besides twenty eight other members.

The other 28 members of the board will include seven members representing the unorganized workers, seven members representing employers of unorganized workers as proposed by the department, two members from the Legislative Assembly as proposed by the Labour Minister, five eminent persons from the civil societies and seven members from the State Government departments.

Labour Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh while talking about the board said that the State Cabinet approved the constitution of the board last year.

The term of reference of the Boards will be for three years and the Board will meet at least once in a quarter.

A note on the modalities of the Board also says that the Board will recommend to the State Government suitable schemes for different sections of the unorganized workers.

However, what is interesting is the fact that the Act was passed way back in the year 2008 but the board has been notified only in 2012 after the new Government took over the affairs

The Board will also advice the State Government on such matter arising out of the administration of the Act besides it will also monitor welfare schemes for unorganized workers besides reviewing the progress of registration and issue of identity cars to the unorganized workers.

The Board will also monitor the extension and implementation of the existing statutory social security benefits and schemes and to formulate and promulgate the new schemes in order to render comprehensive coverage of schemes to the workers.
