Agartala: Dipak Gupta was administered oath of office and secrecy as Chief Justice of the High Court of Tripura at a simple ceremony here on Saturday.
Governor Dr DY Patil administered the oath of office and secrecy to the Chief Justice in presence of Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, his cabinet colleagues and dignitaries.
Besides the Chief Justice, three more Judges – Justice UB Saha, Justice SC Das and Subhasish Talapatra were also administered oath of office. While Justice Saha will act as Judge, Justice Das and Justice Talapatra will perform duty as Addl Judges of the newly created High Court.
Speaking to media shortly after the swearing-in-ceremony, the Chief Minister said, “Today is a historic day for Tripura and a red-letter day for its people. People have been demanding separate High Court since 30 years and today’s development is the result of long struggle for having a separate High Court. With the setting up of separate High Court, internal democracy in the state will be strengthened further.”
Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Altamas Kabir will formally inaugurate the separate High Court here on March 26 next. A modest building has already been in place to house the newly floated High Court of Tripura.
Earlier, the High Court used to perform under the aegis of the Gauhati High court. From March 26 onwards, High Court of Tripura will start independently.
It was the Chief Minister, who pushed the demand for having a separate High Court few years back. After a long discussion, the Assembly passed a unanimous resolution seeking to float a separate High Court and sent it to the Centre. And finally, the state having a population of 33 lakh has got a separate High Court.
