Agartala: Tension gripped southern town of Tripura, Udaipur with the recovery of the body of a 25-year-old youth Congress activist near Chandrapur FCI godown under R K Pur police station on Tuesday night.

The youth was allegedly murdered by the ruling CPI(M) cadres for working in favour of Congress in the just concluded assembly election. The party leaders, however, demanded immediate arrest of the accused.

Manik Dey had sought police protection on receiving threats and intimidations from ruling party cadres after the announcement of election results. But the police did not respond.

“Manik had been on a run for past few days when police didn’t do anything to provide him security. On Saturday, he returned back home and next day he went to jungle to collect firewood from where he went missing,” alleged Congress MLA of the area Pranajit Singharoy.

According to report, local people had spotted Dey’s body hanging from a tree near his hotel adjacent to FCI godown and they immediately informed the police. His private organ had been dimembered and half of his body was burnt in acid hit, indicating that he was first murdered and then his body was hanged from a tree.

“The exact cause of the death could be ascertained only after conducting post-mortem,” said a police officer.

Meanwhile, Youth Congress state president Susanta Choudhury alleged Chief Minister Manik Sarkar had been making provocative statement in public meeting and accusing the local leader of having failed to sway 48 percent of the voters who voted against left front even in this election.

‘Mr Sarkar openly said that Congress was able to secure 48 percent of vote using money, media and mussle power and instigating the cadres, which resulted continuous post poll violence across the state even after a month of election result,’ Mr Choudhury alleged. Congress would launch statewide agitation against the political atrocities, he added. (UNI)
