SHILLONG: The State Government on Friday ordered two separate probes into Thursday’s violence in parts of the city where several persons including tourists were assaulted and business establishments were vandalized during the KSU sponsored awakening rally.
The first inquiry will be conducted by Additional Deputy Commissioner DM Wahlang while the second probe will be headed by Commissioner of Division RV Suchiang and the terms of reference of the inquiry will be to ascertain all angles that led to the violence.
Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma, who returned from Delhi on Friday, informed The Shillong Times that the inquiry headed by Suchiang will submit its report within 15 days.
On the other hand, Wahlang has been given a weeks’ time to complete his probe, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal informed.
According to the Chief Minister, the terms of reference is very exhaustive and the inquiry will ascertain whether the incident was a conspiracy. The probe will also ascertain the involvement of people who instigated the violence.
“Every law abiding citizen is concerned over the incident,” Dr Sangma said.
Dr Sangma also assured that the Government will ensure that people do not see the repetition of this kind of incident, and with this intention the Government ordered the inquiry.
He also asserted that law will prevail while dealing with the matter and no one will be allowed to take the law into their hands.
Reacting to a query about the demands of the NGOs to implement the Inner Line Permit system in the State, Dr Sangma said that he will discuss the matter in the Assembly.
Deborah’s car damaged
The parked car of Social Welfare Minister Deborah C Marak on Thursday evening at Meghalaya Secretariat was damaged partially after unidentified persons pelted stones during the KSU sponsored procession. The incident took place when the Minister was at her office room at the Main Secretariat building.
According to police reports, one more person identified as Rakesh Roshan (27) was injured in the attack during the KSU procession at Laitumkhrah on Thursday. Moreover, a Maruti Alto car (ML-05G-2234) was also damaged, the report said.
