New Delhi: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, who met party MPs from Meghalaya, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh here on Monday, agreed for more attention to the alienated North Eastern region and greater representation for the regional party functionaries within the AICC and other party forums.
A demand for more representation to the region was made by former Union Minister of State Vincent H Pala and recently elected Rajya Sabha MP Wansuk Syiem.
“Rahulji also wanted an immediate meeting with the leaders of North East Students Organization who were eager to talk to him for a long time,” Pala said after the meeting.
Pala told Gandhi that the North East Congress Coordination Committee should be revived and be given a place in the AICC. He also demanded for adequate media campaign of the region by the AICC to highlight the party’s performance in the region.
“A special North East Cell’ may be created to bridge gap between the party and its regional units,” Pala said.
“Catchy slogans like Garibi Hatao should be coined to counter insurgency and under development of the region,” he said, adding that both the suggestions were welcomed by the Congress Vice President.
