SHILLONG: In the wake of the dismal performance of the regional United Democratic Party (UDP) in the Assembly election in the State in February, party president and former Chief Minister Dr Donkupar Roy would have an uphill task at hand when he seeks to retain his position during the UDP general council meeting scheduled in May last.

Party sources on Thursday said that there is a division within the party over the leadership issue.

A section of the party is still favouring re-election of Dr Roy as the president, while a large section is in favour of electing a new leader with the capability to take the party to greater heights, the party sources said.

“Dr Donkupar Roy is stills a force to be reckoned with, but there is growing belief within the party that a change of guard is necessary for the party to move forward in the years to come,” the sources said.

In the attempt to strengthen the base of the party at the grass root level, the UDP would also focus on strengthening of various frontal wings like the Youth and Women wing, the sources said. The party sources also revealed that the UDP central executive committee would meet within the next two weeks to finalise the date for the general council meet.
