SHILLONG: The Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) is all set to turn the abandoned plaza park in front of OB Shopping mall into an embarkation and disembarkation point for passengers.

According to SMB CEO T Lyngwa, an amount of Rs 27 crore has been received by the board recently to implement the project.

“We will do the black topping and it will be an open space for the commuters to board the vehicles,” Lyngwa told The Shillong Times.

The abandoned park in the commercial hub of the city has become an eyesore with people dumping garbage into it. The spot has also turned into a hub of nuisance makers of late.

Informing that the construction would begin soon, the official asserted that the project would be completed before Christmas this year.

“We will have to do some earth cutting and stone gravelling and this project which confines to only an area of 2000 square feet would be completed soon,” he added.

Earlier, the Civil Society Women’s Organisation (CSWO) wanted the State Government to allot the space for the womenfolk selling kwai (betel nuts), vegetable and fruits on the roadside adjacent to the OB shopping mall in Khyndai Lad.
