SHILLONG: CID sleuths on Thursday arrested the Deputy Registrar of CMJ University, Premlal Rai, from the city.

Sources informed that the CID has already started the interrogation of Rai and further interrogation would continue.

It is learnt that the CID has booked him for cheating and forgery.

However, the whereabouts of Chancellor Chandra Mohan Jha still remains unknown, even as the CID is on the lookout for him.

It is learnt that the Court of the District and Sessions Judge had on Wednesday rejected the anticipatory bail application of Rai and three others including CMJ University Registrar Mrinal Kanti Deb, University Director Manjeet Kaur and HR Manager Juban Kharpuri.

The CID swung into action after the Governor’s Secretariat filed an FIR against the University for alleged fraud in awarding fake degrees and admissions.

The CMJ offices in the city and another one in Khanapara have already been sealed by the CID.

Meanwhile, it was reported that the CMJ University off campus study centre in Tura is offering courses like BA, B.Sc, MSW, MA and even B.Ed without any approval from NCTE and AICTE which is in total contravention and gross violation of National Council of Teacher Education and All India Council of Technical Education norms.

The Tura off campus is also offering correspondence (Distance Education) courses without the approval of the Distance Education Council of India. Moreover, the Tura off campus is itself a sham as the website of the CMJ University clearly states that the University does not have any Off Campus/Study Centre. The website is also offering a reward to anyone who informs them of such study centers/off campuses.

Concerned over the future of the youth who have obtained degrees from the CMJ University, the central governing body of the Achik Youth Welfare Organization (AYWO) has written to the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner seeking his intervention.
