SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma in consultation with Deputy Chief Minister in charge Law, Rowell Lyngdoh, will take a decision on whether to replace Additional Advocate General SP Mahanta, who is under scanner for the alleged land grab case.
Since both the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister are out of station, the decision will be taken only once they arrive here, official sources said.
Sources said that senior Government officials will brief the Chief Minister and his Deputy on the case after going though the court order.
The Non Resident Indian, Tushar Nath Bhattacharjee, who got a relief from the Court to take possession of his land currently being held by Mahanta, on Friday said that the verdict has brought back faith in Judiciary as the poor and the common people are often the worst sufferers.
The people of Shillong can hope to see justice in the long run and the reward is there for the people who can persist in the face of endless hurdles created by the powerful and the influential, he said.
In a statement issued to the media on Friday, Bhattacharjee said that the powerful and influential people can use the system for their greedy interests, but finally the truth prevails.
According to Bhattacharjee, the verdict may also encourage other people facing similar hurdles, to keep on persevering and not to give up.
Bhattacharjee, who is currently staying at Sydney, Australia, recollected that he lived in his parental property at Lower Lachumiere as a young student of St. Edmund’s, till his own relative Additional Advocate General Sree Prakash Mahanta and his wife Vennetta Kharsynthiew encroached upon the property.
