DGP apologises to court

 SHILLONG: After the High Court of Meghalaya directed the State DGP, Prem Singh, to appear before the court in connection with the arrest of one Alex Graham Bell Marak in Shella last year for alleged links with the militant outfit GNLA, the top police chief has sought an apology from the court.

Justice SR Sen, in his order on May 14 said, “It appears that the Director General of Police, Meghalaya has sought for an apology and also has taken steps to circulate the order to all the Police Stations with a direction that all officers of the Police Stations to appear before the Court whenever called for along with CD. Since he has taken steps and sought for an apology, the same is hereby accepted and his personal appearance is hereby dispensed with. “

The court had ordered

for the release of Marak in December last year and accordingly the same order was issued by the State Government. However, the accused has not been released till date.

During the hearing on May 14, the public prosecutor ND Chullai submitted before the court that the detainee could not be released as bail application filed by the petitioner before the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Sohra was rejected.

MG Ragharendra Kumar, the Investigation Officer who was also present in the Court submitted that he has no intention to disregard the Court’s order and since he was pre-occupied, he could not come when asked to and sought for an apology from the Court.

Akhil Ch. Baruah, Superintendent District Jail, Shillong also submitted that, it is the practice here in the state of Meghalaya that even after the detainee has been released from MPDA by High Court, bail order is required from a regular court.
