TURA: Health & Family Welfare Minister AL Hek will conduct a spot inspection of all medical centres in Tura on Thursday to ascertain the problems affecting the health care system in West Garo Hills district and the problems being faced by the people of the area due to lack of coordination in the Medical department. The Health Minister agreed to visit Tura after agreeing to a personal request of South Tura legislator John Leslee K Sangma.
In his letter to the Health Minister, the legislator had highlighted the status of the Tura Civil Hospital, which is the only referral hospital for the entire Garo Hills, informing him (Hek) of the need to equip the hospital with necessary infrastructure and adequate manpower for better and improved health care delivery system for the people of the area.
Indicating the absolute number of patients being treated in the hospital, Sangma conveyed that the Tura Civil Hospital is the ultimate medical destination of the people from rural areas in Garo Hills and that despite lack of manpower and basic infrastructure, ‘the doctors here are working hard to discharge their official responsibilities, even going beyond that when their human nature takes over’.
“Despite their best efforts, they are a frustrated lot today and the most misunderstood department,” Sangma said of the medical staff in the hospital, while adding, “people come to the hospital with so much hope and expectations, but many a times they are disappointed and angry when they fail to get necessary medical help due to lack of facilities.”
