SHILLONG: The ANVC (B) has sought the intervention of Home Minister Roshan Warjri to end the police operations against them since the Government has already signed a draft peace pact.

In a letter addressed to the Home Minister, the ANVC chairman Rimpu Marak said that they had signed the draft agreement on January 5 this year to bring peace to Garo Hills and adjoining areas where they have been operating so far.

“We have restrained from all unlawful activities since then, hoping for peace and in order to bring about changes to our society. However, there is a constant hunt, provocation and operations against my cadres which renders it all futile”, Marak said.

According to Marak, the police department does not seem to be happy with the Government’s decision to bring peace in Garo Hills. “The signing of the draft seems to be undermined by some officers in the police department as they constantly provoke my cadres and intentionally try to intrude into areas where we camp”, Marak said.

According to the ANVC (B) chief, the cadres are often picked up from their homes, or when they go out for acquiring their daily supplies.

“My cadres are being arrested, tortured and implicated on slightest pretext and some are even booked under MPDA while others just seem to have disappeared. Was the agreement signed with ill intention over the principles we stand for, or is it communalism that is being played by some officials?” the ANVC leader questioned.

Citing an instance, the ANVC (B) leader said that an order to shoot the ANVC cadres at Dobu came from Shillong.

He also revealed that the police and the parent organization ANVC are operating together in Garo Hills.

“One vehicle (white jeep ML 08C 4247) belonging to an ANVC cadre is used by the police and the same cadre had maintained contacts with the top officials of Tura police, GNLA leader Sohan and UALA chief Norrok.

He also added that they boast of controlling the police in Garo Hills. “Is it that ANVC and SOTs of police are operating against GNLA or secretly hunting and eliminating my cadres?” Marak questioned.
