NONGPOH: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) North Khasi Hills District Unit has called off the two-day office picketing scheduled from Thursday following an appeal from the Ri-Bhoi district administration.
A day after the agitational programme was announced by the KSU, Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Akash Deep Singh invited the KSU leaders for talks in his office chamber here on Wednesday afternoon.
After the meeting, KSU North Khasi Hills district president F Kharkamni informed The Shillong Times that the Deputy Commissioner had assured them that he along with the BDO of Umsning and gram sevak and together with his Assam counterpart, will soon conduct a joint inspection of 15 villages under the jurisdiction of Hima Nongspung where the Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) had forcibly started electrification process and had even erected electric poles.
Kharkamni said that the DC also informed them that the Union Home Secretary will convene a joint meeting between the government of Assam and Meghalaya to look for a solution to the long-pending border disputes.
The KSU president said that the Union, as a good will gesture to the initiatives taken by the Deputy Commissioner, has decided to keep their agitational programme on hold.
He, however, warned that if there is no concrete development in this regard then the Union will be forced to resort to the agitational programme without any room for talks again.
Meanwhile, the Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner also informed that the NGO has decided to call off the picketing after the district administration invited them for talks and apprised them of the various measures taken by the State Government and the district administration to solve the long vexed boundary issue.
Since, his Kamrup counterpart could not give a date for the inspection, the Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner has decided to conduct the inspection on his own on Thursday.
“After inspection I will submit my report to the Home department for necessary action,” the Deputy Commissioner added.
