SHILLONG: The Meghalaya sub-junior football team have qualified for the semifinals of the Coca Cola Sub-Junior National Championship after topping Group C by hammering Uttar Pradesh 10-0 in their last group match, played in Pune on Wednesday.

Both Meghalaya and Jharkhand have seven points from three matches, but Meghalaya qualify for the semis on account of a better goal average.

Reson Malngiang scored four goals for Meghalaya in the fourth, 40th, 44th and 70th minutes.

Jasperson Nongrud also scored four; his goals came in the sixth, 33rd, 55th and 85th minutes.

Foster Lyngdoh (80th) and Banman Roy Nongsiej (88th) scored the other two goals for their state.

Meghalaya will take on Karnataka in the semifinal, to be played in Mumbai on Sunday.

During the group stage, Meghalaya beat Kerala 1-0 in their first match on Saturday and played out a goalless draw with Jharkhand in their second match on Monday.

This is the first time after many years that a football team from the state have managed to qualify for the knock-out stage.
