JOWAI: The Public Works Department (PWD) has informed that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is supposed to repair the National Highway-44 (NH-44) from Jowai to Malidor, which is in a bad condition.
PWD officials informed that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway entrusted the whole stretch of the NH-44 from near Sumer to Malidor to the NHAI.
“Though the handover of the road to the NHAI is still under process the Ministry of Road Transports and Highway has entrusted the repair and the improvement of the Jowai- Malidor road to the NHAI”, a PWD official informed.
Executive Engineer PWD Central Division (National Highway), Sainia Kyndiah informed that neither the State nor the Central Government has provided extra funds for repairing the national highway.
He informed that an amount of Rs. 14.71 crore, sanctioned on March 2011 by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, has been refunded after the decision of handing over the road construction work to the NHAI.
“Tenders were called at that time and the repairing work was about to be allotted to local contractors but as the funds had to be refunded, no repair has been started”, Kyndiah said.
