Editor,
Apropos the letter: ‘Private University Woes’ (ST 29/05/2013), I agree with Iahunlin that the expose on CMJ University is creating havoc for many young people. It has also damaged the reputation of Meghalaya as an education hub. All this makes me wonder how a University with such flaws has been allowed to sail safely during these past years. How come the Governor as the visitor, the Government who readily passed the bill or those in responsibility were unaware of this menace until it has done so much harm? In comparison, MLCU has been constantly questioned about its legal recognition. No amount of clarifications seems to satisfy those persons concerned. Had such vigilant eyes been kept on CMJ University, I believe these woes would have been avoided. Why the inquisitiveness only about MLCU? Something must be there behind all this mess!
Secondly, while respecting Iahunlin’s view on Mr. RG Lyngdoh to be an MP or a VC, I think differently. I’m well aware that RG was a politician with a difference and it would be a blessing to have him as our MP. However, the fall of the JD Rymbai-led Government, in which RG was a Home Minister as well as a staunch supporter, only tells us that persons with ethical values have very little influence on our corrupt political structure. Will Mr. RG be able to stand for his cause in such a corrupt political system? On the other hand, the fact that RG had given a press conference means he is enthusiastic about taking up the new responsibility and leading the University to new heights. Having him as a VC of MLCU would be a blessing too!
While waiting for RG to take over on 1st July onwards, the contribution of the present VC – Dr. Glenn C. Kharkongor must be acknowledged. Iahunlin may have her own reasons for the demeaning remark in her letter, but having known Dr Glenn and his role I can boldly say that as a VC of a private university, his contribution to the state and the youth of the region is unparalleled. He may have his limitations; no one can be and act perfectly. But I don’t think it’s fair to measure a person with limitations alone. Within these few years MLCU is already standing tall! Dr. Glenn’s vision, innovation, initiatives and ability to pull together human resources play a significant role in this.

On cricket and politics
Editor,
Like all Indians, I also think that my celebrated countrymen can be divided into the following two categories: (1) the perfectly honest politicians, cricket players and administrators and (2) the deceitful mass media. Like all the others, I am convinced that S. Sreesanth and Co. are not guilty of spot / match fixing. They have earned their money honestly by the sweat of their brows. This is evident from the fact that a large number of face towels have been found in their pockets. I am of the firm belief that the ill-fated Gurunath Meiyappan is a perfect son in law and the only fault of this poor lad is his enthusiasm for cricket. I am equally confident that the BCCI President, N. Srinivasan can do no wrong as none other than Mr. Farooq Abdullah has called him an “honourable man”. I fully back the Indian cricket captain M S Dhoni for refusing to talk about the fixing controversy as the “right time” has not arrived. Obviously the “right time” will come when our beloved Indian Captain sees which way the wind is blowing.
And like everyone else, I am of the conviction that the mass media has created an unnecessary controversy out of thin air. In fact, I have no doubt that the entire police force, the investigating agencies and the media are hand in glove in hatching a diabolical conspiracy to defraud all of us of the highest entertainment ever – the Indian Premier League.
All Indians like me are willing to swear by the Gita, the Koran and the Bible that A Raja (former Telecom Minister of 2G fame) is as innocent as a lamb. He was unfairly caught in a conspiracy devised by the CAG and the media among others. And we therefore are of the unanimous opinion that the media should only smile when uncomfortable questions are being asked. Learn from the great India Captain M S Dhoni! Only then can our poor politicians and our humble cricketing idols fully serve our great nation.
And last but not the least, I sincerely believe that all of us are proud to be called Indians!
Yours etc.,
G.M. Bruce
