SHILLONG: The District Administration and Basin Development Unit of West Garo Hills under the aegis of Integrated Basin Development and Livelihood Programme (IBDLP) will organise a series of events with an aim to create awareness about environment protection, preservation of forest and catchment areas.
The awareness programmes will also look to create an enhanced level of understanding about judicious use of water, forest management and environment conservation initiatives.
The events will be organised throughout June which has been slated as the Basin Development Month. The Basin Development Unit, West Garo Hills will organise a Basin Development Conclave on June 5-6 to kick-off the observation of the Month.
It will be a round table workshop in which illustrative presentations would be made on the ill effects of jhumming and its ecological imbalance, challenges and convergence initiatives relating to water and climate change strategies.
There will be a programme on creating awareness about Green Earth Day on June 6. Films on environment issues like critically acclaimed documentary on ‘Wah Umkhrah’, the most polluted stream of Shillong will be showcased besides success stories like the cleaning up of Ringrey stream by enthusiastic students of Sherwood School last year in the wake of water crisis in Tura.
The administration has also approved proposals for tree plantation and green awareness programmes.
