WKSU’s 30-day deadline to government

SHILLONG: The West Khasi Students’ Union (WKSU), central body on Friday issued a month’s deadline to the Health Minister and the Directorate of Health Services Meghalaya to set up a General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) institution at Nongstoin and an ANM institute at Mawkyrwat.

The WKSU general secretary, D Sun said that the Union had on June 6 submitted a memorandum to Health Minister A.L.Hek and to the Directorate of Health Services Meghalaya, School for setting up of the GNM and ANM institutions in West and South West Khasi Hills.

“The Health Minister did not give us any assurance but said that he would look into the matter. The Director of Health on the other hand was elated to know that Nongstoin and Mawkyrwat were chosen for setting up the schools of nursing. However, he clarified that he had joined recently and was not aware of the status of the project,” Sun said.

Sun also claimed that on February 23, 2011, the Directorate of Health Services Shillong had sent a proposal to the DMHO, West Khasi Hills to select a location and other parametres for setting up of a GNM nursing school at Nongstoin.

“In reply, the DMHO West Khasi Hills on May 11, 2011, claimed that the arrangements for the setting up of the GNM nursing school and ANM nursing school at in Nongstoin and Mawkyrwat respectively have been made,” the WKSU alleged.

Agitated over the lackadaisical attitude of the government, the WKSU threatened a stir if their demands were not met within a month.
