Former CPM MLA shot dead in West Bengal

KOLKATA: A former MLA and CPM leader Dilip Sarkar was shot dead in broad daylight at Burnpur of Asansole, an industrial and coal mine belt of Burdwan district in Bengal bordering Jharkhand on Sunday. Former CPM MLA from Baraboni assembly constituency was a secretariat member of party’s district committee. Locals said that Sarkar, one among the influential CPM leaders of the area, left home for morning walk. Eye witnesses claimed that the assailants were at least four and came on two motorcycles. They shot from a close range and fled in their two-wheelers. It happened around 6.45am and the road was less crowded, so no one could chase or resist the assailants. Police started an investigation, but nobody could be tracked so far in connection with the murder. Locals claimed that one among the assailants was a woman. The district leadership of the CPI(M) rushed to Sarkar’s house and alleged that it was a political murder. (Agencies)
