Encephalitis kills eight more children in Bihar

Patna: Eight more children have succumbed to encephalitis in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, taking the total deaths in the state since early May to 31, officials said on Tuesday. Two of the children died Tuesday. A district health official said: “It is an alarming situation as the disease continue to kill children.” Muzaffarpur civil surgeon Gayan Bhushan said doctors and health experts were eagerly awaiting the onset of monsoon as the rains are likely to slowdown the spread of the disease. Monsoon is likely to enter Bihar June 11 or 12. Over a dozen children were warded in government hospitals and private nursing homes in Muzaffarpur, about 70 km from here. (IANS)

Jaipur: A Rajasthan Roadways conductor and his minor son died while his wife and a daughter fell unconscious after they consumed poison at an isolated area in Pratapgarh district, police said. 45-year-old Vinod Bhatnagar, who was posted with Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation in Banswara, along with his wife Pratibha (42), son Varun (12) and daughter Pari (8) reached Pratapgarh on Monday night in a bus. “The family consumed poison at an isolated area near a petrol pump and were spotted lying unconscious by locals this morning. They were rushed to the district hospital where Vinod and his son were declared dead. (P

Mumbai building collapse death toll climbs to 7

Mumbai: With three more persons succumbing to injuries, the death toll in the Central Mumbai building collapse has risen to seven, civic officials said on Tuesday. The victims were identified as Mhaisani Baatliwala (75), Halima Sheikh (50) and Mobin Lakha (18), they said. While Sheikh died at the Sion Hospital, two others succumbed at the Hinduja Hospital.On Monday, an elderly woman identified as Zaibunissa Abdul Sattar Laakha (76) was killed and six persons were injured when a portion of a four-storey building caved in, apparently due to rain, in Mahim. 20-old-girl kidnapped, raped near Simla

Moga: A 20-year-old girl of Lohgarh village here was allegedly kidnapped from Dharamkot bus stand by a youth, who raped her for a week at different places including Shimla, police said on Tuesday. The police on Monday evening registered a case of kidnapping and rape against the accused identified as Kapil Dev. Dev’s father Kewal Singh, mother Baljit Kaur and one other relative have also been booked for conniving in the crime. Accused Dev took the victim to Shimla where she was raped, then she was brought to Jagraon, near Ludhiana, where she was again raped and her signatures taken on blank papers, police said. (PTI)

Militant killed, three cops wounded in J&K ambush

Srinagar: A militant was killed and three members of the counter-insurgency Special perations Group (SOG) of the state police were wounded in a guerrilla ambush in south Kashmir Pulwama district late Monday evening, police here said. A police officer told IANS that the militant was killed and three personnel of the SOG were injured when guerrillas ambushed an SOG patrol at Neloura village of Pulwama district Monday evening, 45 km from Srinagar.
