NEHU scientist honoured with prestigious award

SHILLONG: Dr Sudip Dey, renowned scientist with the Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facility, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong has been honoured with the prestigious Bharat Jyoti award for his outstanding contribution in the field of science and technology at a function organized by India International Friendship Society, New Delhi, a non-governmental organization, on June 10.

Dr Dey received the award from Dr MC Bhandari, former governor of Orissa in presence of Dr Bhisma Narain Singh, former union minister and governor, GVG Krishnamurthy, former Chief Election Commissioner, Major Ved Prakash, General Secretary, AICC among others.

By receiving this award, Dr Dey has joined the elite club of none other than yesteryear Bollywood superstar Rajesh Khanna, cricketing giant Sunil Gavaskar, social worker Mother Teresa, former Meghalaya governor MM Jacob among others who are the former recipients of this award.

The award is given to those who have specialized in various fields of science and technology, fine arts, social service, medical profession etc. in lieu of the yeoman services rendered with excellence in their respective fields.

Prominent personalities who received the award earlier include Rajesh Khanna; Sunil Gavaskar; Executive Director, Micro Lab, Dr SM Mudda; renowned gastroenterologist Dr Mukul Rastogi; Lt Gen former Air-Chief-Marshal NC Suri; former director of CBI, Joginder Singh; former chief justices of the Supreme Court of India including Justice PN Bhagwati, Justice RS Sarkaria and Justice HR Khanna; election commissioner GVG Krishnamurthy; medical experts like Dr BK Goyal and Dr Naresh Trehan and others.

Form Meghalaya state so far, this award has gone to some renowned social workers, legal professionals and government officials.

Dr Dey is the only person who was honoured with the award for his contribution in science and technology.
