Jorhat: Two youths from Assam’s Jorhat district who went to repair a car in neighbouring Mokokchung district of Nagaland are missing, police said here on Monday.

The youths identified as Altaf Hussain and Azar Ali, both car mechanics hailing from Natun Mati near Naginijan tea estate, were allegedly called by one Donald Ao of Lungchung Basto of Chairman village in Mokokchung district to repair a car on June 15 last and the duo have not returned since then, they said.

Both Assam and Nagaland police have launched a search operation for the two missing youths as there was tension in the area as the local people are alleging that the two youths have been kept hostage by Naga militants.

Meanwhile, labourers of Naginijan Tea Estate on Monday stopped work claiming that militants from Nagaland had fired at the garden on Sunday night.

All Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (AATTSA) leader Dipak Tanti alleged that a group of about 12 militants from Nagaland opened fire in spite of an Assam police battalion being deployed there.

The police has tightened security in the areas bordering Assam and Nagaland.

Assam-Nagaland border near Naginijan tea garden have witnessed disturbances earlier this month following the killing of a tea garden labourer, abduction of five tea garden labourers by suspected members of a militant outfit of Nagaland and subsequent assault of local Congress MLA Rupam Kurmi by CRPF personnel when he had gone to inquire about the incident.
