SHILLONG: The KSU and FKJGP have submitted a joint petition to President Pranab Mukherjee appealing the appointment of an indigenous local Vice Chancellor for North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
“We would like to express our concern that for more than a decade now, the University has not had the opportunity to have a local indigenous holding the office of Vice Chancellor,” KSU president Daniel Khyriem and FKJGP president Jo Marwein said in a joint petition on Wednesday.
They also said that records testify that Meghalaya today, has no dearth of competent and qualified academician and administrator who are at par with any of the vice chancellors that have occupied the post in recent past.
The two leaders also referred that the changing trend undergoing higher education (semester system) throughout the country poses a great problem for many higher education institutes affiliated to this university.
“The teaching fraternity of our State in recent past had voiced their displeasure over the approached made by the University’s administration in its effort to introduce this sudden transformation in higher education and we fear this may have adverse effects in the quality of college education in the State. In this regard, a local indigenous vice chancellor who understand the education atmosphere is urgently required to reach out, enlighten and prepare the institution for this impending change,” the two organisations said.
After the post fell vacant following the appointment of incumbent VC as the NAAC Director, the two organizations felt that the time was right for the appointment of a local VC in the University.
