TURA: In a significant development aimed at bringing back normalcy to the violence hit region of Garo Hills, traders from Rajabala in West Garo Hills together with suppliers from neighbouring Assam have expressed their desire to restart trade and commerce.
The traders of Rajabala, which happens to be the main supply route to Tura and other towns of Garo Hills, held a meeting with the local MLA and Parliamentary Secretary for Water Resources Mr Ashahel D Shira at Chokchokia LP School, 1 km from Rajabala.
On Wednesday evening to discuss the ongoing law and order situation which has resulted in the closure of all trade and commerce between the two states following the attacks in Tura and Nangalbibra.
The members at the meeting supported the decision of Ashahel D Shira to restart trading at the earliest which would ultimately bring back normalcy to the region.
The traders of Rajabala were supported in their endeavor by the labour association of Assam which deputed its general secretary to attend the meeting at Chokchokia.
“The consumers from Garo Hills need our produce and we need their markets to sell our wares. Both can benefit if trade begins,” reportedly said the secretary of the labour association from Assam.
“The traders from Assam are ready to do business and they are being welcomed by the locals which is a very good sign,” said Shira while speaking to The Shillong Times on Thursday.
While holding discussions with the delegation Shira pointed out that it was primarily rumour mongering which has been keeping people on tenterhooks.
“I urged upon the people not to fall prey to rumours which are stoking hatred and sought their help to keep a check on it,” said Shira.
He was also appreciative of the government’s role in containing the violence from spiraling out of control and said that the onus on peace depended on the role of the public.
