TURA: The GSU has asked the Meghalaya government to regulate the labour work force entering Garo Hills in tandem with the NGOs of the state and have demanded that adequate compensation to the families of the teacher and student who were murdered inside their house in Boldamgre village of Garobadha.

“We demand that the Meghalaya Government take serious note of the series of tragedies that have the potentials to plunge the region into chaos. The region is a potential powder keg where patience among the communities will erode after a time if careful measures are not laid,” cautioned GSU president Tengsak G Momin and chief adviser Manseng A Sangma who also happens to be the Assistant Secretary General of the North East Students’ Union (NESO).

“We demand that the families of the deceased be properly compensated by the government and proper enquiries be conducted to book the guilty and award the most severe punishment to the murderers,” demanded the GSU.

The union has also sought adequate security arrangements for the people living in the border areas and the strengthening of police outposts and stations with adequate men and equipment to tackle any threat to innocent lives.

Blaming the government for failing to regulate the labourers entering Garo Hills, the union has sought the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP), restricting the issue of TNT licenses for trade by non-tribals and establishment of a separate electoral roll for the GHADC.

“We will shortly be mobilizing the Nokmas of West and South West Garo Hills districts to discuee the importance of their role in controlling influx,” informed the GSU. The Union is also heading to Dudhnoi town in Goalpara district of Assam on Tuesday to take part in a peace meeting with other student and social bodies.
