SHILLONG: Though the social networking website ‘Facebook’ is used by young people to be in touch with their near and dear ones, but the social website has also helped Shillong Traffic Police (STP) to intercept many traffic violators who violate traffic rules.

The Shillong Traffic Police (STP) came up with their page in Facebook in the year 2010 and the concept was initiated by former additional SP (Traffic) Herbert Lyngdoh to disseminate regular updates about traffic situation in city.

However, off late, the webpage of the STP is also proving quite beneficial for STP to track down vehicles that violate traffic rules.

East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang on Monday said that people lodged complains against violators by using the STP webpage in Facebook.

“People have complained about vehicles having tinted windows and vehicles with modified silencers and we intercept them and took necessary action,” Kharkrang told reporters.

Some users feel that traffic updates should be made more frequently with an update coming in every 15-20 minutes.
