TURA: Police have launched a search operation in Garobadha-Rajabala region of Garo Hills to trace a teenaged girl who was reportedly abducted from Zekabari area on Monday.

The 19-year-old girl identified as Nonamerry T Sangma was reportedly on her way to obtain a form from an educational institution when she disappeared in broad daylight from Zekabari area under Garobadha police station, 32 kms from Tura.

She belonged to nearby Nogapara village of West Garo Hills district.

The road from Garobadha to Zekabari leads up to Rajabala and nearby Assam.

Unconfirmed reports say that she was abducted by a gang of three criminals who took advantage of the isolated road through which she was passing through.

Police operations were mounted throughout Monday night in the area without any success to trace out the young girl. A senior police official of the rank of an additional SP is reportedly supervising the operation to rescue the teenager.

The Garobadha-Rajabala belt has witnessed a spate of incidents in the last couple of weeks. A gang of dacoits from neighbouring Assam raided a village called Boldamgre village on May 5 and committed rape and dacoity on the villagers.

The same village once again bore the brunt of murderers when an aged primary school teacher, Regina T Sangma, and her grandson Jaswan T Sangma, were murdered inside their home last week. Their bodies were recovered on Sunday evening in a highly decomposed state.

There has been no major breakthrough in any of the three incidents despite the district police having established an anti-dacoity camp at nearby Rochonpara village since the month of May.

Criminals continue to strike with impunity in the border region even as the police grapple with insurgency on one hand and communal tension on the other.
