SHILLONG: After KSU, the opposition UDP has slammed the State Government for its failure to take any initiative in getting the release of the two villagers from Langpih, who are in custody of Assam Police.

“The Government should have immediately secured the release of the duo — Skendro L Mawnai (68) and Twendro L Mawnai (70). But shockingly the Government so far has turned a blind eye to this matter allowing the two villagers to languish in a Guwahati jail,” UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh said in a statement here on Wednesday.

He also questioned why was the Assam police allowed to arrest the two villagers when the State police had its outpost at Langpih.

“Even if they have a committed a crime, they should have been arrested by the Meghalaya police,” Lyngdoh said.

Varying stories leading to their arrest have come to light. Khasi by-standers alleged they were arrested as they were unable to answer to the queries of the Assam Police personnel.

Another version had it that the Assam police arrested them after they were found instigating the Nepali residents of the area. The duo was initially taken to Boko Police Station from where they were transferred to Guwahati jail.
