UDP attacks Govt

 SHILLONG: The opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has expressed concern over the inability of the state government to put in place a mechanism to curb illegal influx of foreign nationals into the State.

“Total inertia and lack of initiative on the part of the Government is compounding the problem (of influx),” UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh said on Thursday.

Lyngdoh, however said the UDP was not looking at only Inner Line Permit (ILP) as a mechanism to curb influx , but was stressing on the need of a “multi-pronged” approach to stop the menace of influx.

“Despite the assurance, the Chief Minister has not acted till date. This only shows lack of seriousness on his part to address the issue,” Lyngdoh said.

He also criticized the Chief Minister for sitting over the recommendations of the HLC on influx. “The Government should act fast before it is too late,” he said.
