Amarnath: 1.57 lakh performed darshan at cave shrine
Jammu: With Amarnath yatra entering 13th day on Tuesday, over 1.57 lakh pilgrims have paid obeisance at the holy cave shrine in South Kashmir Himalayas, even as a fresh batch of 1,951 devotees left for their onward journey on Tuesday. Over 1,57,333 pilgrims have obeisance at the cave shrine in Amarnath till Monday evening, yatra officials said. A convoy of 58 vehicles carrying 1,951 devotees left the Yatri Niwas at Bhagwati Nagar at around 5:00 AM to pay obeisance at Amarnath, police said. The devotees included 1,476 men, 353 women and 25 children, apart from 97 sadhus, they added. With today’s batch, a total of 29,428 pilgrims have left Jammu base camp for Amarnath so far. (PTI)
Three nabbed for smuggling Buddha statue
Shravasti (UP): Three persons were arrested for allegedly smuggling an ‘ashtadhatu’ (eight metals) statue of Lord Buddha in Sirsia area on Indo-Nepal border, SSB sources said here on Tuesday. Shivaji Verma, Jagram Yadav and Balakram were arrested by police and SSB jawans on Monday and the statue weighing around 12 kgs, reportedly smuggled from Nepal, was recovered from their possession, they said. Police claimed it was worth Rs 12 crore in the international market. (PTI)
Six dead, 47 injured in
head-on collision
Bijnore: At least six construction workers were killed and 47 others injured when a tractor-trolley collided head-on with a truck at Haldaur-Nehtaur Road here, police said on Tuesday. The mishap Monday night happened when the workers in the tractor-trolley were returning to Nehtaur village from Chandpur where they were taken for work by a contractor, police said. The collision of the tractor with the sugar bags-laden truck was so fierce that both the vehicles overturned into a roadside ditch after the accident, police said. According to statements of those injured, the number of those dead was nine, out of which six bodies were recovered by the police while another three are still lying under the overturned vehicles at the accident site. The injured were admitted to district hospital, police said. (PTI)
Army jawan injured in mine blast
Jammu: An Army jawan was injured this morning in a mine blast along the Line of Control in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, an Army official said. The mine blast occurred at around 6 AM in Garhi sector of Poonch district when jawans were patrolling the area, the official said. The jawan suffered injury in his left leg and was admitted to hospital, he said. (PTI)
